EU funded VGDUP Programme Closing and Learning Sharing Workshop
Mr. William HANNA, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh attended the Closing and Learning Sharing Workshop of the EU funded Vulnerable Group Development for Ultra Poor (VGDUP) Programme held on 11 December 2011, at the BRAC Center Inn, Mohakhali Dhaka. The workshop was chaired by Mr. Md. Ashraf Hossain, Director General, Department of Women Affairs (DWA) while Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, MP and State Minister, Ministry of Women and Children Affairs was the Chief Guest and Mr. William Hanna, Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh was present as the Special Guest and delivered speech. Speech of Ambassador Mr. William HANNA The Vulnerable Group Development for Ultra Poor (VGDUP), a joint programme of the Government of Bangladesh and the European Union, has been able to bring improvement to the hunger and dire poverty of 80,000 ultra poor women and their dependents, whom now eat minimum of two meals a day and earn higher incomes. The cost of the project was Euro 20.5 Million, which the EU provided funding of Euro 20 Million. The Beneficiary representatives of the VGDUP programme gave an account of their individual stories about the reality of life for ultra poor vulnerable female headed rural households in Bangladesh. They explained how the VGDUP programme has been able to change their livelihood status through social and economic empowerment, awareness building and motivation. The event in pictures:
