The European
Parliament |
The European
Parliament acts as co-legislator with the Council. The Parliament and
Council jointly constitute the budgetary authority. The Parliament also
exercises democratic control over the Commission’s activities. |

The Council of the European Union |
The Council
is the EU institution in which the governments of the Member States are
represented. Together with the European Parliament it as Community
legislator and budgetary authority. It is also the lead institution for
decision-making on the common foreign and security policy and on police and
judicial cooperation in criminal matters. |

The European Commission |
The European
Commission represents the European interest common to all Member States of
the Union. It is the driving force in the legislative process, proposing the
legislation on which the European Parliament and the Council have to take
decision. |

The Court of Justice |
The Court of
Justice is responsible for enforcing Community law. It has jurisdiction in
disputes between Member States, between the Union and its Member States,
between institutions and between private individuals and the Union. It can
also answer questions about the interpretation of Community law raised by
national courts. |

The Court of Auditors |
The Court of Auditors monitors the
Community’s accounts, examining the legality and regularity of revenue and
expenditure in the Community budget and ensuring sound financial management. |

European Central Bank |
The European Central Bank (ECB) is the
guardian of price stability on the euro area. The ECB works in close
co-operation with the national central banks to prepare and implement
decisions of the ECB’s decision-making bodies. |

Economic & Social Committee |
The Economic
and Social Committee (ESC) issues advisory opinions to the institutions, for
example as part of the legislative procedure. |

Committee of the Regions |
The Committee of the Regions is another
consultative body. It calculates the interests of the regions at European
level. |
